Big push of migrants over the Mid-Atlantic
posted by David La Puma | 8:59 PM

The weather is set for some heavy nocturnal migration tonight. There's a cold front offshore, running from Nova Scotia southwest to the Virginia coast where it comes onshore and continues across the Carolinas, N. Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. This frontal boundary marks the change from northerly winds to southerly winds, along with some associated precipitation, making it the barrier to birds migrating from north to south. Winds in our area are from the northwest, which should result in some heavy migration along the eastern flyway, at least for those points north of the frontal boundary. For the Mid-Atlantic we would expect a good push of birds into our area from points north. Birders around the Delmarva Peninsula should watch for heavy precipitation associated with the frontal boundary which may cause localized fallouts of arriving migrants. Because precipitation is expected to be low from New Jersey northward, the best birding locations in New Jersey will most likely be the tried-and-true fall migrant traps such as Sandy Hook (north) Island Beach State Park (central) and Cape May (south). I will post the radar from tonight's migration event tomorrow morning on www.woodcreeper.com.

Good Birding
